Mr Marvis

Feel Marvelous

Elegance in ecommerce.

With a Shopify store already in place, Amsterdam menswear brand MR MARVIS wanted to take the next step in their ecommerce development. Selling in multiple countries around Europe, they needed a fluid and flexible platform that could deliver the highest possible experience to their customers.

Site speed was the key requirement driving this project. With this in mind, the brand had already decided on a headless migration because of the architecture’s proven reputation to provide the fastest stores on the web. Looking for a headless partner they could rely on, especially given the tight four month development deadline, the brand came to us for a collaboration.

Together with MR MARVIS’ own development team and hands-on CTO - we successfully migrated the store to headless architecture, building a lightning fast platform in time for the brand’s peak spring & summer seasons.

A custom headless tech‑stack.

For this project we collaborated on a custom headless tech stack, based on the ever-reliable Shopify Plus back-end and industry-leading CMS platform Sanity taking care of the front-end.

React and Next.JS featured as ever, plus special mentions for the high-performance build system, Turborepo, and the performance monitoring/error checking application Sentry making sure our code remained razor sharp at all times.

We have a flexible range of components that can feature in our headless tech stack. From Contentful to Sanity, Next.JS to Gatsby, we’re not fixed to any one formation and instead pick and choose the most appropriate tools for each project. Working with MR MARVIS’ in-house development team we chose a setup that suited their knowledge and way of working.

Full site flexibility with Sanity.

With their previous Shopify store MR MARVIS managed a lot of back-ends, one for every country they sell in. We don’t often recommend this approach and at first suggested reducing the number to subsequently remove overheads and lighten the workload for the MR MARVIS team.

For reasons specific to the brand’s workflows and business approach, however, they needed to keep the back-end structure the same. No problem. We made a custom workaround that maintained the back-end structure, whilst tying each separate store to a unified, single front-end powered by Sanity Connect.

This means that content management becomes much more straightforward. New products and content edits need only be entered once. The updates then automatically transfer to every MR MARVIS store.

And if specific information is required in the French but not in the Dutch store, for instance, that’s no problem. Sanity provides the flexibility to show site-specific content, giving the brand endless possibilities to offer unique products, discounts and other information to customers in different countries.

At the end of a great collaboration, MR MARVIS now have a store worthy of their position as one of the largest Shopify merchants in The Netherlands. We’re very happy to be working alongside them and look forward to many more projects in the future!
