TL;DR

Migrating from Magento (Adobe Commerce) to Shopify takes 8 to 24 weeks and costs €20,000 to €700,000+ depending on catalog complexity, integrations, and whether you go native Shopify Plus or headless. For most fashion, lifestyle, and beauty brands operating on Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce, the migration lands in the €60,000 to €200,000 range and completes in 4 to 6 months.

Brands leave Magento in 2026 because Adobe's acquisition slowed platform development, the developer talent market has shrunk sharply, self-hosting costs keep rising, and Shopify's feature parity now covers 95% of common Magento use cases at a fraction of the total cost of ownership. Post-migration, brands typically see a 2 to 4x reduction in three-year TCO, a materially faster storefront, and release velocity measured in weeks rather than quarters.

What actually breaks in a Magento to Shopify migration: custom Magento extensions with no Shopify equivalent, complex product attribute sets, multi-source inventory (MSI) rules, admin-heavy workflows, and SEO equity if URL redirects are not mapped carefully. Everything else is a solved problem with the right playbook.

At Ask Phill, we have migrated brands including Pink Gellac (Dutch nail care leader) and PAUW (luxury multi-brand fashion, 26 stores) off Magento onto Shopify Plus. This guide is the full breakdown of how we do it, what it costs, and what to plan for.

Why brands are leaving Magento in 2026

Magento has been in structural decline since Adobe acquired it in 2018 and rebranded it as Adobe Commerce in 2020. The 2026 reasons brands migrate are compounding, not new. Six drivers dominate the conversations we have with brands considering the move.

1. The developer talent market has collapsed. Magento-certified developers are increasingly scarce, and their day rates have risen sharply as the pool shrinks. Shopify's developer pool is now roughly 5 to 10 times larger by conservative estimates, with lower average day rates and faster hiring.

2. Adobe's product velocity is slow. Adobe Commerce releases update quarterly. Shopify ships two major Editions per year plus hundreds of interim releases. Winter '26 alone shipped 150+ features. Spring 2026 shipped 215+ including the Universal Commerce Protocol, native A/B testing, and Hydrogen rebuilt on Vercel. The gap widens every quarter.

3. Self-hosting cost keeps rising. Magento requires dedicated cloud infrastructure (typically AWS or Adobe Commerce Cloud), a DevOps function, security patch discipline, and PCI compliance maintenance. Annual hosting and ops costs for a mid-market Magento store commonly run €50,000 to €200,000. Shopify's platform fee replaces most of that.

4. Security burden. Magento requires manual security patch application. Missed patches expose stores to credit-card-skimming attacks (Magecart) that have hit hundreds of Magento merchants over the past five years. Shopify handles security centrally.

5. Native AI and agentic commerce. Adobe's response to agentic commerce (products discoverable and purchasable inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot) is a fraction of Shopify's. The Universal Commerce Protocol shipped with Spring 2026 makes every Shopify catalog eligible for AI-driven distribution instantly. See our Shopify Spring 2026 Edition breakdown for the full picture.

6. Total cost of ownership. Aggregating platform license, hosting, DevOps, security, and agency spend, Magento TCO typically runs 2 to 4x higher than Shopify Plus for a comparable mid-market brand. Independent analyses by Forrester and Total Economic Impact studies consistently reach this range.

Brands that were comfortable with Magento's flexibility five years ago are moving because that flexibility now comes with a compounding tax.

Magento vs Shopify: the honest comparison

Shopify wins on total cost of ownership, developer velocity, hosting reliability, native retail (POS), AI distribution, and time-to-market. Magento (Adobe Commerce) retains an edge in three narrow scenarios: extreme catalog complexity beyond 250,000 SKUs with deep attribute hierarchies, hyper-custom checkout logic that predates Shopify's Checkout Extensibility API, and existing deep integrations with Adobe Experience Cloud (Analytics, Real-Time CDP, Target).

For most fashion, lifestyle, and beauty brands, none of the Magento-favoring scenarios apply. For brands with those specific patterns, Adobe Commerce may still be defensible in year one but the trajectory is against it.

For a full head-to-head, we cover this in our dedicated Shopify Plus pricing guide and Shopify Plus Partner evaluation framework.

What a Magento to Shopify migration actually costs

The cost of migrating from Magento to Shopify depends on three variables: catalog complexity, integration count, and whether the frontend is native Shopify or headless. Our observed ranges from over 200 Shopify migrations, of which more than 40 have been from Magento or Adobe Commerce:

No-code migration: €20,000 to €50,000, 2 to 3 months

Best for brands with clean product data, straightforward Magento 2 setups, and standard integrations (Klaviyo, Shopify Payments, one shipping app). Uses a Shopify theme like Dawn or a paid theme with light customization. Data migrated via Cart2Cart, Matrixify, or a similar tool with manual QA. Best for brands under €10M in yearly revenue or with limited custom Magento extensions.

Mid-market accelerator build: €60,000 to €200,000, 4 to 6 months

The most common range for fashion, lifestyle, and beauty brands. Includes custom Shopify Plus theme, complex data migration (products with 20+ attributes, historical orders, customer records), multi-integration setups (ERP, PIM, marketing automation, POS), and a full SEO migration. Both Pink Gellac and PAUW landed in this range.

Custom enterprise migration: €150,000 to €700,000+, 5 to 10 months

Headless Shopify Plus (Hydrogen or Next.js), deep ERP/OMS/WMS integration, multi-region and multi-language, custom checkout, complex pricing logic, regulatory compliance work. Fits brands with 50,000+ SKUs, multiple legal entities, complex B2B and DTC blended operations, or specialized retail requirements. See our headless Shopify guide for when headless is worth the additional investment.

The ongoing cost story is where the migration pays back

The initial project is the visible line item. The ongoing savings are where Magento-to-Shopify migrations produce genuine TCO wins.

  • Hosting: €50k to €200k/year on Magento becomes zero (bundled in Shopify Plus at €2,100 to €2,250/mo)
  • DevOps and security patching: a dedicated internal or agency function on Magento (€40k to €120k/year) becomes largely automated on Shopify
  • Development velocity: feature releases that took 4 to 8 weeks on Magento typically ship in 1 to 2 weeks on Shopify. That compounds into meaningful revenue when you can iterate faster.

For a full year-by-year comparison, request a paid discovery workshop and we will model your specific TCO. Or read the Shopify Plus TCO breakdown for the full cost stack.

How long a Magento to Shopify migration takes

A typical Magento to Shopify migration runs 4 to 6 months from kickoff to launch for a mid-market brand. The phases stack roughly like this.

Discovery (weeks 1 to 3). Audit the Magento store: product catalog structure, custom extensions in use, integration inventory, admin workflows, checkout customizations, SEO URL structure, historical order and customer data volumes. Map integration requirements. Define the target Shopify architecture (native Plus vs headless, apps to use, custom development scope). Deliver an architecture decision document.

Design (weeks 3 to 8, parallel). UX and UI design for the new Shopify Plus theme. For most brands this is a rebranding opportunity as well as a replatform, so design work runs longer than a pure lift-and-shift. Define performance budgets per page type (LCP, CLS, INP targets) before development begins.

Data migration mapping (weeks 4 to 10). Map Magento data schemas to Shopify equivalents. Products, variants, attributes, categories, customers, orders, redirects. Identify which custom Magento fields become Shopify metafields. Build the migration scripts or configure Cart2Cart/Matrixify.

Development (weeks 6 to 20). Theme build, custom Shopify Functions for checkout logic, app installations and configuration, ERP and PIM integration development, custom admin extensions if needed. Runs in parallel with data migration testing.

QA and staging migration (weeks 16 to 22). Full data migration to a staging Shopify store. Redirect map verification. Order flow testing. Multi-currency testing. Load testing if applicable.

Launch and post-launch (weeks 20 to 24). Cutover from Magento to Shopify with DNS switch. Real-time monitoring. Redirect verification via Google Search Console. Post-launch hypercare for 2 to 4 weeks with rapid-response development capacity.

Fastest possible timeline: a small brand with clean data and no custom Magento extensions can migrate in 8 to 10 weeks. Slowest realistic timeline: enterprise headless builds with deep integration work land at 6 to 10 months. Anything faster than 8 weeks or slower than 10 months usually means the scope was misjudged.

What actually breaks in a Magento to Shopify migration

Most migration guides skip this. This is the editorial answer to "what will go wrong that I have not budgeted for."

1. Custom Magento extensions with no Shopify equivalent. Magento's module ecosystem is huge, and many mid-sized Magento merchants have 20 to 50 custom extensions installed. Common problem areas: advanced pricing rules, custom shipping calculators, hyper-specific product configurators, custom customer group logic. Solutions: some become Shopify Functions, some become metaobjects, some become app installs, and some genuinely need custom development. Audit early.

2. Complex product attribute sets. Magento supports deeply nested attribute sets per product type. Shopify uses variants and metafields. For brands with 30+ attributes per product (fashion with fit, fabric, care instructions, sustainability certifications, etc.), the mapping requires design. Not blocked, but do not underestimate.

3. Multi-source inventory (MSI) rules. Magento 2's MSI system allows granular per-warehouse inventory allocation with custom logic. Shopify has multi-location inventory but with different rule semantics. For merchants operating 5+ warehouses with specific allocation logic, this needs redesign.

4. Admin-heavy workflows and internal tooling. Some brands built extensive custom admin panels in Magento for their operations, merchandising, or customer service teams. Shopify's admin is more opinionated. Custom internal tooling often needs to be rebuilt with Admin UI extensions or as external apps consuming the Shopify Admin API.

5. SEO equity if URL redirects are not mapped carefully. This is the single most-cited migration failure. Magento's URL structures often differ from Shopify's. Every existing indexed URL needs a 301 redirect to its Shopify equivalent. Miss this and organic traffic drops 30 to 60% in the first six weeks post-migration. See the SEO migration checklist below.

6. Historical order and customer data. Migrating years of order history and customer accounts requires careful mapping. Shopify has strict data limits per resource, and most migration guides will tell you to leave older orders behind. At Ask Phill, we aim to migrate up to 10 years of historical orders so brands keep the customer lifetime value data, repeat-purchase history, and CRM segmentation intact. It takes deliberate mapping and staged imports, but the alternative (running Magento in maintenance mode as an archive) creates a permanent data debt.

7. Braintree, Adyen, and other non-Shopify Payments integrations. If you use a payment gateway that is not Shopify Payments, verify Shopify support level. Some are supported natively, others require app-based integration, some are not supported at all (in which case you switch gateways during migration).

8. B2B customer groups and complex pricing tiers. If your Magento setup uses customer groups with tier pricing and specific product visibility, this maps to Shopify B2B (now available on Basic through Plus as of 2026, see B2B on Shopify). The catalog structure is different. Plan for a re-architecture, not a copy-paste.

9. Custom checkout logic. If your Magento store has custom checkout steps, fields, or logic (age verification, prescription verification, custom validation), rebuild via Shopify's Checkout Extensibility API. Shopify Plus is required for this. Cannot be replicated on Basic or Advanced plans.

10. Adobe Experience Cloud dependencies. If your marketing team uses Adobe Analytics, Adobe Target, Adobe Journey Optimizer, or Real-Time CDP tied deeply into Magento events, plan for either replacing those tools or rebuilding the event integration on Shopify's data layer.

Everything on this list is solvable. None of it is a reason to stay on Magento. It is a reason to budget for a real discovery phase and pick an experienced Platinum Partner.

Adobe Commerce to Shopify: what is different

Adobe Commerce is the paid version of Magento 2 (Adobe rebranded Magento Commerce to Adobe Commerce in 2020). The migration playbook is nearly identical to Magento 2 to Shopify with three notable additions.

Adobe Commerce Cloud considerations. Merchants on Adobe Commerce Cloud (Adobe's managed hosting) often have specific data export limitations and contract cancellation timing to plan around. Cancel too early and you lose data export access; too late and you pay for parallel hosting.

Adobe Experience Cloud integration. Deep integrations with Adobe Analytics, Adobe Target, Adobe Real-Time CDP require a decision: replace with Shopify-native alternatives (Analytics, Shopify Audiences), replace with Klaviyo and Segment, or maintain Adobe tools with new event integration. Most brands moving off Adobe Commerce also reduce their Adobe Experience Cloud footprint.

Business Intelligence (BI) reporting. Adobe Commerce includes MBI (Magento Business Intelligence) with custom reporting. Shopify's native analytics is different in shape. Custom reports may need to be rebuilt in Shopify Analytics or migrated to a BI tool like Looker or Metabase.

The core cost, timeline, and technical patterns are the same as Magento 2 to Shopify. Budget the same ranges.

Magento 1 to Shopify migration: important context

Magento 1 reached end of life in June 2020. Adobe has provided no security patches since. Merchants still running Magento 1 are exposed to a growing set of known vulnerabilities and are highly recommended to migrate. In practice, Magento 1 to Shopify is typically simpler than Magento 2 to Shopify because Magento 1's extension ecosystem is thinner and data models are less complex.

Timeline: 8 to 16 weeks for most Magento 1 stores.

Cost: €20,000 to €120,000 depending on customization.

Migration tool: Cart2Cart supports Magento 1 to Shopify export. Data migration is straightforward. The rebuild work is what takes time, not the extract.

Magento to Shopify migration tools: when to use each

A handful of tools dominate the Magento to Shopify migration space. The right choice depends on your data complexity and whether you have agency support.

Cart2Cart. The most common Magento to Shopify migration tool. Supports products, categories, customers, orders, reviews, coupons, and 301 redirects. Cost: from $69 for basic migrations to several thousand dollars for full migrations with all entities. Best for: brands with straightforward data, no custom Magento extensions, and no agency support. Limitation: it moves data, not custom logic. If your Magento store has custom pricing rules, custom checkout logic, or specialized product configurators, Cart2Cart moves the data but not the behavior.

Matrixify (formerly Excelify). A Shopify app for CSV-based bulk import and export. Excellent for post-migration data manipulation, complex product attribute mapping, and iterative testing. Cost: $50 to $200/month. Best for: brands with agency support who need fine-grained control over how Magento data maps to Shopify fields.

Bespoke migration scripts. For enterprise migrations, custom scripts written by an experienced Shopify Plus partner are typically the right approach. Handles edge cases the off-the-shelf tools do not: complex metafield mapping, custom customer group logic, non-standard SKU structures. This is what Ask Phill uses for enterprise migrations.

The tool question matters less than most people think. In an experienced Platinum Partner-led migration, the tool is the delivery mechanism, not the strategy.

SEO migration checklist: protect the organic traffic

Losing SEO equity is the single most-cited failure of Magento to Shopify migrations. It is entirely preventable with discipline. The checklist we run on every enterprise migration:

Before launch:

  1. Crawl the entire Magento site with Screaming Frog or Sitebulb. Export every URL that returns a 200 status.
  2. For each URL, define the Shopify equivalent and build a comprehensive redirect map (spreadsheet with old URL, new URL, redirect type).
  3. Preserve URL structure where possible. If Magento uses /product/[handle].html and Shopify uses /products/[handle], the redirect works fine.
  4. Rebuild internal links to point to new URLs before launch, not after.
  5. Rebuild XML sitemaps for the new Shopify store and prepare for submission.
  6. Preserve title tags and meta descriptions where the content still makes sense. Do not rewrite everything.
  7. Migrate structured data (product schema, breadcrumb schema, FAQ schema) with the new URL structure.

At launch:

  1. Implement all 301 redirects at cutover, not after.
  2. Submit new sitemap to Google Search Console immediately.
  3. Verify robots.txt allows crawling.
  4. Verify canonical tags point to the correct new URLs.
  5. Request indexing on the top 100 URLs via GSC URL Inspection.

Post-launch monitoring:

  1. Monitor GSC Coverage report daily for the first four weeks. Watch for crawl errors, soft 404s, and coverage drops.
  2. Monitor organic traffic in GA4 or your analytics tool. Expect a 5 to 15% dip in the first two weeks that recovers within four to eight weeks if redirects are clean.
  3. Fix any 404s from important URLs immediately. Do not wait.
  4. Monitor Core Web Vitals. Shopify's platform typically improves LCP and CLS materially, which itself helps rankings within 60 to 90 days.

Skipping any step on this checklist is where migrations lose traffic. We estimate 60 to 80% of migration SEO failures come from redirect map gaps or delayed 301 implementation.

B2B Magento to Shopify migration

Magento's B2B module is one of its historical strengths. As of 2026, Shopify B2B is available across Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans (Winter '26 shipped feature parity with dedicated B2B platforms). See our complete B2B on Shopify guide for the full feature comparison.

Key mapping considerations for B2B Magento to Shopify:

  • Magento customer groups become Shopify B2B companies with location-specific catalogs
  • Magento tier pricing becomes Shopify B2B volume pricing and quantity rules
  • Magento payment terms map to Shopify B2B payment terms (Net 15, 30, 60, 90, custom)
  • Magento company accounts become Shopify B2B company profiles with buyer permissions
  • Magento requisition lists map to Shopify B2B customer portal reorder functionality
  • Magento quote workflow maps to Shopify draft orders and quote apps like Sniffie or Advanced Cash

Most Magento B2B feature parity now exists in native Shopify B2B on Plus. Some edge cases (highly customer-specific pricing at scale, complex EDI workflows) benefit from Shopify Plus with Custom App integration for ERP and EDI providers.

What replaces your custom Magento modules on Shopify

Every Magento merchant has a stack of custom extensions or modules that do specific things. Here is how the most common categories map to Shopify equivalents.

  • Custom pricing rules map to Shopify Functions (discount, delivery, payment customization APIs) on Shopify Plus
  • Advanced product configurators become custom Shopify apps built with the App Bridge framework, or third-party configurator apps (Zakeke, Product Options)
  • Custom customer group logic becomes Shopify Customer Segments (native) or Shopify B2B companies
  • Custom shipping calculators become Shopify Functions delivery customization API
  • Custom checkout steps use the Shopify Checkout Extensibility API (Plus only)
  • Admin dashboards or custom reports become Shopify Admin UI Extensions, or external BI tool (Looker, Metabase)
  • Google Feed / Product Feed extensions use Shopify's native Google & YouTube channel, or apps like Feedonomics
  • SEO-focused Magento modules use Shopify's native SEO capabilities (canonical tags, meta descriptions, redirects) plus apps like Smart SEO or Yoast (Shopify version)
  • Custom email transactional templates use Shopify's native transactional email editor plus Klaviyo for marketing
  • Multi-site setup (Magento's multi-store) becomes Shopify Plus expansion stores (9 included on Plus) or Shopify Markets

The one-to-one mapping does not always exist. Some Magento functionality requires rethinking rather than replicating. This is where an experienced Platinum Partner earns their fee.

Case study 1: Pink Gellac (Magento to Shopify 2.0)

Pink Gellac is the Netherlands' premier nail care brand. Their Magento store performed poorly on mobile, where 80% of their traffic came from. Maintenance issues consumed development budget that should have been going toward growth.

We migrated Pink Gellac to Shopify 2.0 with a custom starter theme, then integrated Tapcart to launch an iOS app version of the store. Load times dropped materially across desktop and mobile.

Result on launch day: a 12% jump in conversion rate.

Post-launch, Pink Gellac gained: automatic platform maintenance (no more manual patching), an app funnel with instant page loads and one-tap checkout, two languages and four country configurations for international scaling, and freed-up development budget for growth initiatives instead of firefighting.

See the full Pink Gellac case study for the complete story.

Case study 2: PAUW (Magento to Shopify Plus)

PAUW is a luxury multi-brand fashion retailer with 26 stores across the Netherlands. Their Magento setup had become a costly maintenance strategy that struggled with UX flexibility and cross-channel unification.

We migrated PAUW to Shopify Plus with integrated Odoo (ERP), Akeneo (PIM), Klaviyo (marketing automation), and Shopify POS across all 27 retail locations for unified commerce.

Results:

  • Reduced maintenance costs materially by moving off Magento
  • Significantly improved site speed and mobile experience
  • Dual-language support for international audience
  • Seamless PIM-ERP-storefront-POS integration eliminating manual reconciliation
  • Foundation laid for unified customer data across online and in-store

See the full PAUW case study for the complete story.

Post-migration: what to expect in the first 90 days

The first 90 days on Shopify after leaving Magento have a predictable rhythm.

Weeks 1 to 2: hypercare. Real-time monitoring of orders, checkout, integrations. Expect 2 to 5 minor issues per week that require rapid fixes. Have your development partner on retainer with dedicated capacity.

Weeks 3 to 6: SEO stabilization. Organic traffic dips 5 to 15% then recovers as Google reprocesses your redirect map and re-indexes URLs. Watch GSC Coverage report daily. If traffic does not recover by week 8, the redirect map has gaps.

Weeks 6 to 12: performance measurement. Core Web Vitals improvements start showing up in Google's ranking signals. Most brands see 15 to 40% organic traffic growth compared to their Magento baseline within 90 days if the migration was executed cleanly.

Weeks 8 to 12: iterate on the new capabilities. Start using capabilities Magento did not have: Shopify Functions for discount and checkout logic, native A/B testing (Rollouts, shipped in Spring 2026), Shopify B2B if applicable, Klaviyo integration depth.

Month 4 onward: unlock growth. With hosting, DevOps, and security burden off the development team, they can focus on revenue-generating projects instead of firefighting. This is where the migration ROI compounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take in 2026?

A typical Magento to Shopify migration takes 4 to 6 months for a mid-market brand. Simple migrations with clean data and no custom extensions can complete in 8 to 10 weeks. Complex enterprise migrations with headless architecture, multi-region setup, and deep ERP integration take 6 to 10 months. The primary variables are catalog complexity, custom extension count, and integration scope.

How much does it cost to migrate from Magento to Shopify?

Magento to Shopify migration costs range from €20,000 for no-code migrations to over €700,000 for full enterprise headless implementations. Most fashion, lifestyle, and beauty brands land in the €60,000 to €200,000 range for a mid-market rebuild with Shopify Plus. Ongoing cost savings post-migration typically deliver 2 to 4x lower total cost of ownership over three years compared to remaining on Magento.

Will my SEO rankings drop after migrating from Magento to Shopify?

Not if the migration is executed correctly. A properly implemented 301 redirect map, preserved title tags and meta descriptions, and rebuilt structured data typically causes a temporary 5 to 15% traffic dip in the first two weeks that fully recovers within four to eight weeks. Many brands see organic traffic growth within 90 days because Shopify's Core Web Vitals scores tend to outperform Magento. Skipping the SEO migration checklist is the most common cause of permanent traffic loss during platform migrations.

Can I use Cart2Cart to migrate from Magento to Shopify?

Yes, Cart2Cart is the most widely used Magento to Shopify migration tool. It supports products, categories, customers, orders, reviews, and 301 redirects. Pricing ranges from $69 for basic migrations to several thousand dollars for full enterprise migrations. Cart2Cart moves data but not custom logic; if your Magento store has custom pricing rules, custom checkout steps, or specialized product configurators, you need agency support to rebuild those on Shopify.

What is the difference between Magento and Adobe Commerce?

Adobe Commerce is the paid, enterprise version of Magento 2. Adobe acquired Magento in 2018 and rebranded Magento Commerce to Adobe Commerce in 2020. The open-source version of Magento (Magento Open Source) still exists separately. From a Shopify migration perspective, the playbook is nearly identical for both, with three additions for Adobe Commerce: Adobe Commerce Cloud contract timing, Adobe Experience Cloud dependency mapping, and MBI (Magento Business Intelligence) report migration.

Should I migrate from Magento 1 to Shopify or upgrade to Magento 2?

Magento 1 reached end of life in June 2020 and has received no security patches since. Migrating to Shopify is almost always the better choice over upgrading to Magento 2. The upgrade path from Magento 1 to Magento 2 is nearly as complex as a full replatform to Shopify, at a similar or higher cost, and preserves Magento's structural disadvantages (hosting cost, security burden, developer scarcity). If you are still on Magento 1 in 2026, Shopify migration is urgent.

Does Shopify support B2B like Magento does?

Yes, and as of Winter '26 Shopify B2B has reached feature parity with dedicated B2B platforms including Adobe Commerce B2B. Shopify B2B supports company accounts with buyer permissions, custom catalogs with tiered pricing, net payment terms, quantity rules, wholesale channels, and integrated ordering. It is available on Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans as of 2026. For complex enterprise B2B with EDI workflows and deep ERP integration, Shopify Plus with Custom Apps is typically the right architecture.

What happens to my custom Magento extensions when I migrate to Shopify?

They do not migrate automatically. Custom Magento extensions need to be mapped to Shopify equivalents. Common categories: custom pricing becomes Shopify Functions, product configurators become custom Shopify apps or third-party apps like Zakeke, custom shipping becomes Shopify Functions delivery customization, custom checkout becomes Shopify Checkout Extensibility. Not every Magento extension has a Shopify equivalent; some functionality gets rebuilt from scratch. Audit your Magento extension list during discovery and plan the replacement path for each.

How do I choose between native Shopify Plus and headless Shopify for my Magento replacement?

Choose native Shopify Plus if platform speed, developer velocity, and total cost of ownership are your primary drivers. Choose headless (with Hydrogen or Next.js) if you need extreme design flexibility, granular content management independence, or custom product experiences beyond what Shopify's Liquid templates support. Most Magento replacements land on native Shopify Plus. See our headless Shopify guide for the full decision framework.

Who has done Magento to Shopify migrations successfully?

At Ask Phill, we have migrated brands off Magento onto Shopify Plus including Pink Gellac (Dutch nail care leader, 12% conversion lift on launch) and PAUW (luxury multi-brand fashion, 26 stores unified across online and in-store). Choosing a Shopify Platinum Partner with specific Magento migration experience (not just general Shopify Plus experience) materially reduces migration risk. The right questions to ask any partner: how many Magento migrations they have delivered, from which Magento versions, how they handle SEO migration mapping, and whether they run a paid discovery before proposing scope.
